Joann Sfar Comments on Culture

In the past few days, a small controversy has arisen on the Internet (what's new?) over a critical statement made by Gainsbourg (vie héroïque) Writer/Director Joann Sfar in an article posted on Numerama this past Wednesday, the same day as the film's release in France. While commenting on the subject of piracy and illegal downloading, he was quoted as saying:

"Culture is a commodity like others that (people) must buy."

While I absolutely agree that the artists and studios who create amazing works of art and culture should certainly be compensated for the time and investments that were put into making them, to say that "culture is a commodity" really just leads to a wonderful philosophical debate, which is exactly what's happened in the comments section of the original article by Guillaume Champeau.  To read it in French, cliquez ici, and in English, click here.
